DTE still expects approval for OpenAI, Oracle data center power despite delay

SALINE TWP., MI — DTE Energy officials still expect state regulators to approve special contracts for the utility to power what would be Michigan’s first hyperscale data center project in Saline Township.

DTE officials “anticipate approval on December 18,” when the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) next meets, according to a business update for investors published Friday.

That’s despite DTE‘s previous warning that the entire deal to power the massive 2.2-million-square-foot facility could be off the table if the Public Service Commission did not fast-track approval by Friday, Dec. 5. The utility is seeking ex-parte, expedited approval to provide the 1.4-gigawatt demand in electricity for the data center backed by ChatGPT creator OpenAI and cloud computing giant Oracle on about 250 acres of a 575-acre site off W.
