City explains reasons for cutting down nearly 50-year-old trees at Ann Arbor plaza

ANN ARBOR, MI — Ann Arbor officials are explaining the decision to cut down several trees at Liberty Plaza.

As part of a long-term improvement project at the downtown plaza, the city removed trees that were found to be in poor health or creating safety and accessibility concerns, city officials said in a statement Tuesday, Dec. 23.

That includes one honey locust and four littleleaf linden trees, most of which were original plantings from when the plaza was established in 1977, according to the city.

The improvement project is a collaboration between the city’s parks department and the Downtown Development Authority and is focused on enhancements and placemaking, not a major capital reconstruction, officials said…
