CSG launches pilot grocery store bus program

The University of Michigan’s Central Student Government launched a grocery bus, a pilot program facilitating 171 trips between the Central Campus Transit Center, Pierpont Commons and Trader Joe’s on Jan. 24 and Jan. 25. The program was launched in response to the challenges students face when finding transportation for grocery shopping.

Business senior Emily Ryan, CSG co-director of policy, told The Michigan Daily in an interview the buses were intended to eliminate transportation barriers students face, as it can be challenging to buy groceries when living on campus.

“One of the biggest problems is that there’s no full service grocery stores on campus,” Ryan said. “Getting affordable groceries also means bus transfers, long walks or paying for an Uber, Lyft or RideShare. The grocery bus was designed to remove all of those barriers.”…
