Review of Ypsilanti police response in 30-hour standoff with swordsman delayed again

YPSILANTI, MI – Despite growing pressure from residents, the Ypsilanti City Council voted Tuesday to again delay any investigation into police conduct during a 30-hour standoff with a 53-year-old man with a sword.

The council unanimously agreed on Feb. 4 to wait until March to decide whether the Ypsilanti Police Advisory Commission should review the police department’s response to the January incident, during which officers say the man barricaded himself inside his home with a sword.

The discussion centers on the response at 1111 Cross Street, where officers used flashbangs, tear gas and demolition equipment after the man allegedly threatened police and retreated inside on Jan. 4.
