Why Michigan’s sudden snowmelt is triggering Air Quality alerts

DETROIT – A lot of people were surprised to see Air Quality Advisories being issued for parts of Michigan on Sunday and continuing into Monday. Those pollution-related alerts typically happen on humid summer days, and times when wildfire smoke is drifting across Michigan, creating hazy skies.

But the strange culprit in February? Fast-melting snow that’s releasing pollution into the air, and light winds that are trapping it closer to the ground so it’s hanging around longer and making it easier for us to breathe in.

This air quality issue was triggered by our current stretch of above-normal temperatures that are expected to last into at least the first part of this week…
