LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — More mental health beds and lower-cost surgical care are coming to Lansing as part of a major expansion by UM Health-Sparrow, following approval Thursday from the University of Michigan Board of Regents.
The health system plans to build a new behavioral health hospital and an ambulatory surgery center on its Lansing campus, with groundbreakings expected this summer and openings targeted for 2028.
New behavioral health hospital
The centerpiece of the plan is a 64-bed behavioral health hospital on vacant UM Health-Sparrow-owned property behind the Lansing hospital, near Pennsylvania Avenue and Jerome Street. The $83 million facility will treat adult, geriatric and — for the first time in the Lansing area — child and adolescent patients.
