Ann Arbor schools to pause start of new construction as inflation drives 44% cost spike

ANN ARBOR, MI — Ann Arbor Public Schools will have to hold off on starting any new construction this year in connection with the district’s massive capital bond plan amid a higher-than-expected 44.4% rise in material and labor costs since 2019.

District leaders are sounding the alarm on projected negative cash flow by 2028 if adjustments aren’t made to original plans to rebuild or modernize several schools over the next few years.

Now, AAPS officials said they’re going to take the time to recalibrate school facility needs, enrollment, district programming changes and continued inflationary impacts months ahead of a request to renew the district’s 2017 sinking fund…
