Rezoning OK’d for The Dean high-rise near University of Michigan campus

ANN ARBOR, MI — The Ann Arbor City Council has cleared the way for a high-rise called The Dean overlooking the University of Michigan marching band practice field.

Council voted 9-0 Monday night, March 2, to approve rezoning nine properties for the proposed development across from Elbel Field on Madison Street, Fourth Avenue and Fifth Avenue.

The properties, just outside of the downtown boundaries, are being rezoned from R4C (multi-family residential) and M1 (limited industrial) to D1 downtown core, which would allow for the new high-rise to replace old rental housing there.

The Planning Commission recommended council approval of the rezoning in December. Commissioners at the time OK’d a conceptual area plan for the project showing 220 apartments in a building rising 14 stories…
