4 Ann Arbor affordable housing units sit empty after over a year trying to fill them

ANN ARBOR, MI — The need for affordable housing is a regular topic of conversation in Ann Arbor, but four new units downtown still sit empty after over a year of trying to line up tenants.

Washtenaw County’s Office of Community and Economic Development, which manages a waitlist for affordable housing in private developments, began advertising over a year ago 19 income-restricted apartments were going to be available in a new high-rise called The Legacy.

The 19-story tower behind the Michigan Theater opened last August with hundreds of mostly luxury-branded apartments geared toward University of Michigan students. It also has 19 units priced below market rate at $1,275 to $1,701 per month, as required through an agreement with the city…
