University of Michigan Health unveils sculpture honoring COVID-19 health care workers

ANN ARBOR, MI — University of Michigan Health unveiled a bronze sculpture honoring health care workers who responded to the COVID-19 pandemic during a ceremony on Wednesday, March 11 at the Ann Arbor medical campus, according to a news release.

The sculpture, titled “Hearts and Hands – A Tribute to Health Care Workers,” was created by Vermont artist James Sardonis and funded by donations. It features two bronze figures in clinical attire sitting apart on a marble bench, each with an arm outstretched toward the other. Their fingertips, barely touching, form a heart.

Attendees included Paul DeWyse, Michigan’s first hospitalized COVID-19 patient. DeWyse survived his illness just two years after receiving a double lung transplant at University Hospital, thanks to specialized intensive care from a UM team…
