University of Michigan considers $8.6M for underground tunnel rehabilitation project

ANN ARBOR, MI — The University of Michigan hopes to invest $8.6 million in improvements to one of its underground tunnels that connects to the medical center campus.

The UM Board of Regents will vote Thursday, March 19, on a development proposal to rehabilitate its Huron Tunnel at East Huron Street and Zina Pitcher Place, according to an action item.

The project will restore about 300 feet of tunnel and “associated vaults,” as well as renew electrical and mechanical systems, restore structural components and upgrade the tunnel’s ventilation infrastructure, if approved…
