University of Michigan student died from hypothermia, was legally drunk

ANN ARBOR, MI — Late 19-year-old University of Michigan student Lucas Mattson was legally drunk when he died in frigid January temperatures, a Michigan Medicine autopsy report on March 17 confirmed.

His cause of death was listed as hypothermia, with “acute ethanol intoxication” having played a significant role in it. He had a blood alcohol level of 0.156, more than seven times the legal limit for drivers under 21 in Michigan, according to his autopsy report.
