Members of the Ypsilanti Township Board of Trustees unanimously passed a resolution on Wednesday declaring strong opposition to the University of Michigan and Los Alamos National Laboratory developing a nuclear research facility anywhere within the township’s bounds.
The University of Michigan shared its plan to develop the facility at the end of 2024, saying it would be used for “high-performance computing and AI research that will enhance and strengthen the university’s research capabilities.” Part of the pitch included two computing centers to be located within Washtenaw County, with one supporting Los Alamos researchers and the other allowing U of M faculty and staff to collaborate with Los Alamos on research across disciplines.
