China demands probe after University of Michigan researcher takes own life following ‘hostile questioning’

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Chinese officials are demanding an investigation after a University of Michigan researcher died by suicide soon after being questioned by federal investigators.

The Detroit News reports Danhao Wang died on March 20. Wang, a Chinese national, was an assistant research scientist with U-M’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He reportedly jumped from an upper level inside a building on campus.

Chinese officials say Wang was recently interrogated by American officials about his work with the university and allege that Wang was harassed, calling it “hostile questioning.”
