A sod and turfgrass company with roots stretching back to 1892 has planted itself in North Fort Worth, opening a new store on a stretch of US 377 that used to be home to a used car lot. Super-Sod’s location at 5960 Kroger Dr. opened September 3, 2026, marking the company’s fifth store in Texas and its latest bet on the region’s relentless housing growth.
The store sells premium sod, grass seed, lawn care products and compost, according to its website, as reported by Community Impact. The site sits off US 377 and Kroger Drive, near the Keller-Fort Worth border. The site sits along a busy commercial corridor near the Keller-Fort Worth border, a detail that underscores how retail space along that stretch of US 377 keeps turning over as the area grows.
A Company Built From a Georgia General Store
Super-Sod’s history goes back to 1892, when the business started as a general store in Lakeland, Georgia, the same Community Impact report notes. Patten Seed Company, its parent, formed in 1954, and by 1958 the operation was already supplying Bermuda grasses to golf courses, athletic fields and lawn areas. Super-Sod itself was created in 1980 specifically to meet growing demand for sod in urban markets, a strategy that has carried the brand across six Southern states.
Today the company runs 29 stores and 10 farms across Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina, per the same account. Before landing in Fort Worth, Super-Sod had already built out a North Texas footprint with retail locations in Cleburne, Granbury, Pilot Point and Ponder, positioning the new store as another node in a regional network rather than a standalone bet.
Private Equity Backing Fuels Multi-State Growth
The expansion has institutional muscle behind it. In October 2020, private equity firm Heartwood Partners made a major investment in Patten Seed Company alongside its founding family to support farming technology upgrades and retail expansion, according to Private Equity Professional.
