Thousands of guns were stolen from vehicles in Dallas last year, police urging gun owners to do better

Dallas Police say 2,394 guns were stolen from cars in Dallas in 2023, that’s an average of 7 guns a day being stolen. And unfortunately, many of those guns are then used to committ crimes.

Information from the Dallas ATF confirms many of those stolen weapons were used in aggravated assaults, robbery, and deadly conduct offenses.

Police say many of the gun thefts occurred in so-called crime hotspots, many in areas with shopping centers, bars, and restaurants.

Police say they need help from the public to cut down on these crimes. Police are reminding gun owners to store their guns safely and to not leave them in a car. And police remind gun owners to keep the weapon’s serial number in a safe place in case it gets stolen.

Police say these steps will help them better protect the city.
