Demolition now complete at Arlington’s former Roark Elementary school

After more than six decades, the building that was once Arlington’s Roark Elementary is now almost gone.

The school near the Arlington GM plant opened in 1961 and closed 60 years later, although the building became the temporary home of Berry Elementary for one year while Berry’s new building was constructed.

When Berry moved to its new location, the old Roark building stood empty.

Demolition began after the holidays and is now complete except for rubble removal. The real estate will be traded to the city for a new park complete with a splash pad to serve families in east Arlington. In return, the school district receives the parcel, about a half mile away, where Wessler Park now stands.

The Arlington School District will build a new home for Carter Junior High there.
