Feds come up with more money to help homeless in North Texas

While homelessness in North Texas is down a bit, it remains a huge problem. But the feds have come up with more money to help.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development is giving $27 million to a coalition of groups working together to cut homelessness in Dallas and Collin counties. That’s 23% more than 2022, and 44% more than 2021.

The group Housing Forward represents non-profits and properties working together to reduce homelessness. Their Chief Executive says that public-private partnership is making it possible to house more people than ever before.

Last year’s homeless census showed more than 4,200 people living on the street one night in January 2023, but that was actually a four percent drop from 2022, and a 14 percent drop in unsheltered homelessness.

They did this year’s point-in-time count a couple of weeks ago and will release the results this Spring.
