DeSoto man accused of releasing animals from Dallas Zoo ruled incompetent, some charges dropped

Dallas County prosecutors have dropped six animal abuse charges against the DeSoto man accused of letting animals out of their cages at the Dallas Zoo a year ago.

In August of last year, a judge ruled that Davion Irvin was ‘mentally incompetent’ following a rash of animal escapes at the Dallas Zoo.

It started when officials say Irvin cut open the cage of a clouded leopard, allowing the wild cat to get out and roam free. The animal was located later on Zoo grounds.

A few days later, Irvin cut open the cage housing Langur monkeys. Fortunately, the Langur monkeys were too afraid to leave their habitat and did not escape.

Once he was captured Irvin told police he loved animals and that if he was released from jail, he would steal more. A Dallas County grand jury indicted him for misdemeanor animal cruelty and felony burglary charges.

Court documents show that Irving remains incompetent to stand trial. He has also spent the maximum time allowed for the crime in the Dallas County jail and the misdemeanor animal cruelty charges should be dismissed.
