Bedford officer fatally shoots man during altercation, police say

One man is dead after being fatally shot by a Bedford police officer during an altercation on Wednesday, the department says.

Incident started at about 2 p.m. Wednesday when officers located a man driving a stolen vehicle at a local business, Bedford police said.

Police said officers stopped the driver in the 2200 block of Central Drive, where he conveyed suicidal thoughts to the officers.

Officers spent several hours trying to deescalate the situation and persuade the man put his gun down, but they were unsuccessful.

Police said officers used non-lethal methods to subdue to the man, but he started to try to escape and officers perceived a threat. That’s when a Northeast Tarrant County SWAT team member shot the man.

Police said he died on the way to an area hospital. The officer was placed on administrative leave.

The Bedford Police Criminal Investigations Division and Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office are reviewing the incident.
