A zoo has made history with the first back-to-back gharial crocodile hatchlings born in North America.

The two gharial hatchlings were born on June 16 and 22 at Fort Worth Zoo, Forth Worth, Texas.

Gharials are listed as critically endangered animals by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

Fort Worth was the only zoo in North America which has produced multiple gharial crocodiles and is the first to repeat the process.

The two crocodiles were hatched from eggs laid by two different females within the zoo’s gharial group.

Vicky Poole, associate curator of ectotherms, at Fort Worth Zoo, said: “Everyone here at the Fort Worth Zoo is ecstatic to have repeated success with our gharial hatchings for the second year in a row.

“Having two additional hatchlings is a big win for growing the gharial population in zoos and expanding knowledge to help this critically endangered species survive.”
