Texas sues New York doctor for prescribing abortion pill to woman through telehealth

Texas launched a lawsuit against a New York doctor for illegally prescribing abortion medication to a woman near Dallas in a first-of-its-kind lawsuit.

The lawsuit accuses New York Dr. Margaret Daley Carpenter of violating Texas law by providing the drugs to a local patient and seeks up to $250,000. No criminal charges are involved. Attorney General Ken Paxton of Texas initiated the legal action on Thursday in Collin County, with the announcement made public the following day.

This challenge is among the first against protective measures established by Democrat-led states to shield physicians, particularly after the fall of Roe v. Wade.

In announcing the lawsuit, Attorney General Ken Paxton disclosed that a 20-year-old woman had complications from abortion-inducing pills — mifepristone and misoprostol — ending up hospitalized.
