Ms. Jefferson is a 20-year-old female bald eagle. When she was little, she fell out of the nest, breaking both wings. As a result, she will never be suitable for release into the wild. She doesn’t seem to mind because she gets Christmas gifts with wrapping paper. If you think kids get excited, watch this bald eagle with her present!
If ever there were a “proper lady,” it would be Ms. Jefferson. This regal bird is the perfect example of class and style. When her handler tosses the gift into her enclosure, the bird gets immediately possessive. She begins to mantle, the protective stance an eagle assumes, covering the package with her wings.
Her screeches might be interpreted a couple of ways, but in this case, it is the squeal of pleasure. She likes her gift. It wasn’t long before the bald eagle positioned her present to open it. This is not her first gift-giving holiday, and she knows exactly what to do with it.
The bald eagle knows how to unwrap the present, grabbing at the folded ends where she can grip and tear with her beak. She uses her talons to grip and steady the box while she works on unwrapping it. Once she gets the wrapping off, she shakes the box until the goodies fall out. Today, Ms. Jefferson has beef and salmon chunks that she happily eats.
It is very satisfying to watch this bald eagle appreciate her present. Even with her permanent disability and inability to fly , she is an excellent animal ambassador for the species. She conveys this majestic bird’s graceful power with every movement.
