Neighbors on edge: Woman beaten to death with rock in Fort Worth’s

A quiet stretch of South Jennings Avenue turned into a crime scene early Sunday when officers discovered 50-year-old Susan Watkins lying near a trash dumpster, a large rock perched on her head. According to a Fort Worth Star-Telegram report, Watkins was found unresponsive at about 8:45 a.m., and succumbed to her injuries later that day at a hospital.

Police allege that 47-year-old Steven Black is the suspect. The affidavit supporting his arrest describes multiple witnesses: two people saw Black kicking Watkins behind the dumpster, while a third saw him clutching a rock as officers arrived and drop it in a futile attempt to conceal himself. An officer, acting on that description, chased Black a short distance before taking him into custody. Black was booked on suspicion of murder; he declined to explain how bloodstains on his legs got there.
