58-Million Pounds – Hillshire Brands Announces Major Recall

(KMDL-FM) The Hillshire Brands Company, based in Haltom City, Texas, has issued a recall notice for approximately 58 million pounds of corn dog and sausage on a stick products that were made available for sale in Texas and Louisiana. Perhaps a more concerning aspect of this recall is that many of the products were also sold to school districts and Department of Defense facilities nationwide.

By the way, you did read the estimated pounds of recalled products correctly, that is 58 million pounds of corn dogs and sausage on a stick products. The reason for the recall notice is possible extraneous matter contamination. Some of the recalled brand names include State Fair Corndogs and Jimmy Dean Pancakes and Sausage on a Stick.

The extraneous matter appears to be pieces of wood that have gotten mixed in with the batter that coats the hot dog or sausage. It is believed the wood fragments may have come from the wooden sticks used in the manufacturing process. The investigation into the cause of the fragments is ongoing.

The issue was first brought to the attention of Hillshire Brands following multiple consumer complaints. Five of those complaints involved injuries. The recall notice did not go into the specifics or the severity of those injuries.
