GameStop Pulls Plug On 10 DFW Stores As National Closings Pile Up

GameStop is hitting reset on its North Texas footprint, closing 10 stores across the Dallas-Fort Worth area as part of a sweeping national pullback that will shutter hundreds of locations. The Grapevine-based video-game chain is trimming its physical presence yet again after a previous round of closures, leaving local gamers with fewer places to trade in titles, grab preorders or hang out for launch events.

According to CultureMap Fort Worth, the latest DFW cuts include stores in Fort Worth, Arlington, Mansfield, Saginaw and Watauga, part of an expected national reduction of about 470 locations. CultureMap reports that its list was compiled by cross-checking GameStop’s own store directory with other regional coverage, and notes that some of the affected North Texas sites already show up as closed on the chain’s website.

In its annual report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, GameStop said it shut down 590 U.S. stores in the prior fiscal year and warned it “anticipates closing a significant number of additional stores in fiscal 2025.” The filing also shows the company operated 2,325 U.S. locations as of Feb. 1, 2025, meaning this new round of closures will further shrink an already retreating store base.

Why GameStop Is Shrinking

Company leaders have repeatedly pointed to the steady shift toward digital downloads and an internal review of store performance as primary reasons for the cutbacks. “As a part of our profitability initiative, we are reducing our global store base, which includes closing stores that are not meeting performance standards or stores at the end of their lease terms,” the company explained in its SEC filing…
