Severe thunderstorms swept across Texas on Tuesday, throwing air travel into chaos and forcing hundreds of flight cancellations and delays at Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)—one of the busiest travel hubs in the United States.

According to near-real-time data from flight tracker, Flight Aware, over the last 24 hours, more than 500 flights have been canceled at DFW. Average delays are approaching 1 hour 50 minutes, and according to FlightAware, they continue to climb as the airport works through a growing backlog.

The disruption stems from a powerful storm system that moved through North and Central Texas on Tuesday and continued into the night. According to multiple sources, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop on Tuesday, temporarily halting incoming flights and slowing departures to prevent dangerous congestion in the air and on runways.

In a “severe thunderstorm warning,” issued on Tuesday, the National Weather Service (NWS) warned that the storms could bring large hail, damaging wind gusts, heavy rain, and lightning—all of which make it unsafe for planes to take off or land. Forecasters believe that the threat of storms could continue into Wednesday, suggesting that further flight disruption is likely.
