The McDonald’s location in Derwood, Maryland, closed after serving the community for roughly 40 years, marking the end of an era for local customers who grew up visiting the restaurant.
A longtime community fixture disappears
Located along Frederick Road in Montgomery County, the restaurant had become a recognizable part of daily life for many residents. Generations of families passed through its dining room, whether for after-school meals, road trip stops, or quick breakfasts before work.
The McDonald’s officially closed on March 15, 2026. News of the closure spread quickly online, with many locals expressing disappointment and nostalgia over losing a business they viewed as part of the neighborhood’s identity.
Reason for closure
The building had reportedly been placed on the market for lease before the closure announcement, with plans already in motion for Arby’s to take over the property later this year. The site itself has a long fast-food history in Derwood, previously operating as both a Roy Rogers and a Hardee’s before becoming a McDonald’s in the mid-1980s. Its decades-long presence made it one of the area’s most recognizable quick-service restaurant locations.
