For Tom Giancola, the red-footed booby he saw was a “fancy bird” — not a bird-watching marvel, at least for Maryland.
During an afternoon voyage on June 21 in the Chesapeake Bay, the Annapolis resident spotted the booby on the bow of his boat, where it stayed for about an hour while he and fellow passengers goggled at the sight and snapped pictures near Thomas Point Park.
“This bird just swooped around us and landed right on the bow of our boat and hitched a ride with us,” Giancola told The Baltimore Sun. “It was unusual because I’ve never seen a bird land on a boat and just hang out like that.”…
