Angela Alsobrooks secured a congressional seat in Maryland Tuesday, becoming the first Black candidate elected to represent the state in the U.S. Senate.
Alsobrooks, the Prince George’s County Executive, ran against Republican Larry Hogan, a former two-term governor of Maryland. They were vying to replace retiring Sen. Ben Cardin, a Democrat who did not seek reelection after serving three terms.
Both presidential campaigns have loomed over the race, with Hogan pledging his independence from Republican nominee Donald Trump while Alsobrooks has embraced Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and ran largely on her support for abortion rights.
Maryland has an abortion amendment to the state’s constitution on the ballot. In total, voters in ten states across the nation are voting on reproductive rights.
