Two dead after single-car crash in Reston

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. ( DC News Now ) — Police said a second person died after a crash in Reston over the weekend.

The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) said that officers responded to North Shore Drive and Charter Oak Court in Reston around 4:10 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10.

There, they found that an SUV had left the roadway and hit a tree.

The driver, 35-year-old Shawn Ballard of Herndon, was taken to a local hospital, where he died shortly afterward. The passenger, 48-year-old Nicole Hamm of Reston, was also taken to the hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.

FCPD received notice that evening that Hamm died due to her injuries.

As of Tuesday, investigators believe that speed was a factor in the crash. FCPD detectives were still working to determine whether or not alcohol was also a factor.
