Downtown Silver Spring Sees Major Drop in Violent Crime in 2025, But Auto Theft Remains a Challenge, Police Say

Continuing from the report earlier this year that showed significant reductions in many crime categories in 2024 compared to 2023, the Downtown Silver Spring area has maintained its downward trend in most areas into the first quarter of 2025, according to 3rd District Commander Jason Cokinos.

Key statistics comparing Q1 2025 to Q1 2024 in the Downtown area show substantial decreases in violent crimes. Robberies have declined by 30.8%, while carjacking incidents have fallen by 50%. There have been no reported contact shootings or homicides, and felony assaults involving guns have dropped by 90%. Additionally, early signs indicate positive returns in the fight against retail theft.
