In 2023, the Washington Post ranked Steeze Burger as the #1 burger in the DMV. Laytonsville resident Hunter Karametos, founder of Steeze Burger, launched the pop-up burger business in 2022 after spending nearly a year sampling over 150 different burgers for research. Currently, he’s enjoying one burger a day throughout May (National Burger Month) and shares a few words about three of his favorite local burgers below:
“Sunshine General Store (22300 Georgia Ave. Brookeville, MD): Nestled in the back of a Gas station you have driven past 100 times sits a local gem that blends historical charm with burger excellence. My personal favorite and one of the best burgers in Montgomery County comes from Sunshine General store in Brookeville, MD.
Opened in 1947 as a gas station and small general store was a popular stop and one of the only stops for gas along Georgia ave. Close to 10 years later opened a small kitchen in the back of the general store and these cheeseburgers were born. A 8oz loosely formed patty is place on the flat top with some seasonings. Meanwhile a toasted bun gets mayo, mustard and ketchup on the crown, while the heel gets lettuce and tomato. Once flipped the seasoned patty gets a slice of cheese, placed on the bun and cut in half.
