Montgomery County’s housing crisis and what’s being done about it

There are over 52 buildings in Montgomery County that are at least half empty. Meanwhile, homelessness in the county has increased by 54% since 2022, and it is directly tied to the area’s shortage of affordable housing.

“The cost of housing has skyrocketed, and it makes it unaffordable to live in Montgomery County. It’s not unique to us, it’s true of most urban and suburban jurisdictions all across the country,” Montgomery County Councilmember Andrew Friedson said. “Last year, home prices went up in Montgomery County 11.2%… wages went up 1.7%… the math doesn’t math.”

As housing prices rise in Montgomery County, people looking for homes are finding it harder and harder to afford a place to live. The median sale price for homes in the county increased by almost $200,000 in the last five years. The Montgomery County Council attributes the increased pricing to a lack of supply in the area…
