Hundreds hospitalized, seven killed in Maryland heatwave, health officials say

HANOVER, Md. (DC News Now) — Hundreds of people were hospitalized and seven people were killed in Maryland during a late June heat wave, according to data from the state’s health department.

Health officials say the number of heat-related deaths in the state rose by seven in just one week, with a combined total of eight people dying from the heat so far in 2025.

The heat wave, the first of the 2025 season, caused temperatures across D.C., Maryland, and Virginia to soar to the triple digits, with the heat index pushing up to 110 degrees at times.

During this short period from June 22 through June 28, seven people died from heat-related illness, and 472 people visited emergency rooms or urgent care centers for treatment, according to the Maryland Department of Health data.

Of the 472 visits, the majority (220) consisted of people ages 18 to 44, according to the data. The second largest group of people who sought care were those 65 and older, with 112 visits.

The Maryland Department of Health provided tips for preventing heat-related illnesses, especially for vulnerable groups such as people under five years old, over 65 years old, with chronic illnesses, taking certain medications, and who are exercising or working outdoors…
