AG Brown joins multistate effort defending school mental health funding

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown has joined a multistate coalition in supporting a legal challenge to the U.S. Department of Education’s decision to end key federal funding for school-based mental health programs.

The group of state attorneys general filed an amicus brief backing a lawsuit brought by a school district in New Mexico, which is contesting the Department’s move to cut off grants established under the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.

“Eliminating school-based mental health services means students have fewer counselors and therapists to turn to when they’re struggling with thoughts of harming themselves or others,” said Attorney General Brown, via press release. “Our Office will always defend resources that support our children’s wellbeing and oppose funding cuts that risk their health and safety.”…
