The events unfolded over months, where after the initial incident in Sterling, three vehicles were broken into on April 19 at a farm in Leesburg, with various items reported stolen; the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office pursued a variety of investigatory avenues, examining surveillance footage, reviewing motor vehicle records, subpoenaing cell phone records, cooperating closely with other law enforcement agencies and utilizing license plate reader data across several states, these efforts enabled authorities to piece together a pattern of criminal activity.
