Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Portions of Maryland and Northern Virginia

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for several counties in Maryland and Northern Virginia, including Montgomery, west central Howard, and southeastern Frederick counties in Maryland, as well as parts of Loudoun and Fairfax counties in Virginia. The warning is in effect until 7:00 PM EDT this Sunday, August 17.

According to the NWS, severe thunderstorms were detected just after 6:12 PM EDT along a line extending from near Ballenger Creek to Leesburg, and are moving east at 25 mph. The storms pose a significant hazard, with a potential for 60 mph wind gusts.

The NWS warns that these damaging winds could cause trees and large branches to fall, potentially injuring people, damaging property, and blocking roadways. Localized power outages are also a possibility. Residents are advised to secure any light objects that could become airborne…
