ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WBFF) — A new state audit revealed Maryland’s Social Services Administration failed to meet a slew of state and federal standards, including ensuring kids weren’t under the care of people with disqualifying criminal records, including people on the Maryland Sex Offender Registry.
The audit of the SSA, which is under the Maryland Department of Human Services, was conducted by the Office of Legislative Audits. It found the SSA did not have comprehensive procedures in place to ensure people with criminal backgrounds didn’t have access to kids under the state’s care, didn’t ensure foster care children’s medical appointments were kept up, didn’t take the appropriate steps when timely child abuse and neglect investigations were not done, and did not meet federal foster care performance requirements.
“Based on the nature, significance, and duration of the findings in the current audit, we have again concluded that SSA’s accountability and compliance level remains unsatisfactory for the third consecutive audit,” Brian Tanen wrote, a legislative auditor…
