Maryland AG advises state and local police to avoid enforcing civil immigration laws

MARYLAND (WBFF) — Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown issued a memo Wednesday advising state and local law enforcement agencies not to enforce civil immigration laws or assist federal agents in doing so.

The memo also reminded officers to properly use body-worn cameras, identify themselves during stops, and notes they are subject to civilian oversight and potential civil liability for misconduct.

Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler commented, “[Brown’s] guidance doesn’t change anything. It just reinstates what we already know. Maryland law does not allow local law enforcement to work with ICE on immigration.”…
