89-year-old man who pleaded guilty to killing wife didn’t want to move to an assisted living facility

CHANTILLY, Va. — An 89-year-old man has pleaded guilty to shooting his 87-year-old wife while she slept in their Chantilly home. The shooting happened in February. The man’s daughter was home at the time and told police that he did not want to move into an assisted living facility.

According to court documents, Douglas Sommer took his .32 caliber pistol and went into the den area of their home while his wife, Marilyn Sommer, was sleeping in their recliner chair. Prosecutors say Douglas Sommer pointed the firearm at his wife at close range and pulled the trigger five times, striking the woman in the head and chest.

Both Douglas Sommer and his daughter, who was in another room at the time, called 911 to report the shooting. When Fairfax County first responders arrived, Sommer calmly stated that he had killed his wife and showed them where the gun was located on their couch before he was taken into custody…
