‘The Upcounty Hub’ launches food pantry for furloughed federal employees

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) – The government shutdown has led to a steady increase in the need for food assistance. Because of it, a group in Montgomery County launched a resource designed to support federal workers who are furloughed.

The Upcounty Hub says the number of people it serves has increased drastically in the past month. Many of their new clients are federal employees who have been affected by the shutdown. The demand has been so great that it has led the food bank to create a pantry specifically for those workers.

“We average currently about 1400 families a week,” The Upcounty Hub’s Director of Operations Marko Rivera-Oven said, “and this was before the shutdown. Now, we’re nearing about 2000 families a week.”…
