Virginia Man Arrested After High-Speed Pursuit Ends In Boat Crash In Florida Keys

MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – A 23-year-old Great Falls, Virginia, man was arrested on Tuesday, following a multi-agency pursuit on U.S. 1 in the Upper Keys that concluded when the suspect’s vehicle struck a trailered boat. Fortunately, no major injuries were reported in the incident.

The dramatic chain of events began near Mile Marker 102 at approximately 4:40 p.m., when the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office stopped a southbound Range Rover SUV, driven by Christopher Brinkley Smithers, for alleged reckless driving.

According to officials, Smithers immediately fled the scene of the traffic stop, initiating a high-speed chase down the Overseas Highway. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) quickly took the lead in the pursuit as it continued south…
