FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — A breakthrough was made in a nearly 40-year-old cold case after investigators said they identified the killer in the 1988 murder of Delores Marie “Mooda” Thompson, the City of Frederick said Friday.
According to the Frederick Police Department, Calvin Ziegler was identified as Thompson’s killer after DNA connected him to the crime. Ziegler died in 2010 but was interviewed multiple times during the initial investigation.
It all started when Thompson was found dead in her apartment on Feb. 1, 1988, in the 100 block of S. Market Street. Her death was ruled a homicide by ligature strangulation, with additional evidence determining that she had also been sexually assaulted.
