Fairfax County to implement 4% food tax amid budget challenges, public opposition

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (7News) — Starting in January, you’ll be required to pay a 4 percent food tax at restaurants and for all prepared meals in Fairfax County. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors passed the food tax this year to help address the county’s budget challenges, even though it was rejected twice by voters.

“The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has talked about the affordability crisis in Fairfax County. Has this board made life more affordable for its residents?” 7News Reporter Nick Minock asked County Supervisor Pat Herrity.

“Absolutely not,” answered Herrity. “A lot of talk. But when you look at the action, 50% increase in real estate taxes in 10 years, meals tax, bag tax, new regulations that increase the cost of housing. No, they haven’t addressed affordability at all.”…
