ANNAPOLIS, MD—Stargazers across Maryland are in for a busy and potentially spectacular celestial month, as the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports that no fewer than nine different meteor showers will grace the December night sky. The two most notable events are the Geminids, expected to be the most active, and the Ursids, known for surprise outbursts.
The most highly anticipated event is the Geminids meteor shower, which is set to peak on the night of December 14. Conditions for viewing the Geminids are considered optimal this year due to a waxing crescent moon, which will minimize ambient light interference. Viewers could see up to 120 meteors per hour. While the shower is visible starting around 9 p.m., the DNR advises that the best viewing times will be after midnight and continuing until sunrise. Look toward the east to catch the fiery streaks.
Later in the month, the Ursids meteor shower will reach its peak on December 21, conveniently coinciding with the first day of winter. While the typical zenithal hourly rate (ZHR) is around 10 meteors per hour, the Ursids are famous for brief, unexpected outbursts that could create an amazing sky display. With the shower occurring only three days after a new moon, the resulting dark skies will provide prime viewing conditions. Sky watchers should direct their gaze toward the Little Dipper constellation…
