ANNAPOLIS, Md. — In a historic and unanimous vote, Del. Joseline Peña-Melnyk[D-Prince George’s County] was elected speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates during a special legislative session on Tuesday, Dec. 16.
Peña-Melnyk, who has served in the House of Delegates for several years, is both the first immigrant and Latin American woman to lead the chamber, assuming one of the most powerful positions in Maryland state government. As speaker, she will oversee legislative proceedings, set the House’s agenda and play a central role in shaping policy priorities across the state.
