Major winter storm threat looms for Maryland, heavy snow and ice possible this weekend

BALTIMORE, MD—Confidence is rising for a significant winter storm to impact much of the eastern United States, including Maryland, starting Saturday, January 23, and continuing through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center (WPC).

In an update issued Monday afternoon at 3:20 p.m. EST, the WPC highlighted increasing certainty in the development of a large winter storm system. The storm is expected to deliver heavy snow north of its track and a treacherous wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet along and south of it, stretching from the Southern Plains eastward to the Mid-Atlantic region.

For Maryland, the state lies in a critical transition zone where impacts could vary significantly depending on the exact storm track. Much of the state could see a high likelihood of heavy snow accumulations. This could lead to snow-covered roads, reduced visibilities, and widespread hazardous travel conditions.
