Sheriffs defend work with ICE under immigration enforcement program

Two days before a Maryland Senate committee hears a bill that would ban local law enforcement agencies from entering into immigration enforcement agreements with the federal government, some sheriffs gathered Tuesday in Annapolis to tell lawmakers to let them “do their job.”

Specifically, the sheriffs want to continue operating under 287(g) agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that let them hold suspects an additional 48 hours, if they are determined to be undocumented, to hand over to ICE for immigration proceedings…
