Maryland DJS secretary addresses juvenile facility concerns in House hearing

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WBFF) — Secretary Betsy Fox Tolentino, the head of the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS), addressed lawmakers in the House Judiciary Committee, detailing how she plans to address issues in the department.

Officials with the Office of the Correctional Ombudsman Juvenile Monitoring Unit addressed lawmakers first, discussing the findings of a recently released report that found concerning conditions in some of the DJS facilities.

Some of those conditions included rodent infestations, hygiene concerns, expired food, and a child in need of medical attention stuck sitting in their own waste. Officials also detailed issues related to staffing shortages, among other issues, and expressed the need for urgency in addressing them…
